The highway department‘s major responsibility is the maintenance of 69 miles of town road, which includes 27 miles of unpaved roads. The highway department is responsible for snow plowing, sanding, salting, paving, grading, bridgework, drainage issues, sign issues and other road maintenance.

The highway department staff, finances and project priorities are managed by an elected Superintendent of Highways, who holds a four year term. The department includes 6 full time staff in addition to the Superintendent, with some seasonal part time assistance for snow plowing, sanding and/or salting.

The responsibility of the Water District maintenance, which serves the area in the hamlet of Claverack, at the intersection of 9H/23/23B, is also handled by some of the highway department staff.

Garbage Removal

Within the township (with the exception of the Village of Philmont) there is no garbage, recyclable, appliance, brush or leaf pickup. These items can be brought to Columbia County Transfer Stations.

You can purchase County Garbage bags directly from the Claverack town office which can then be filled to bring to the Columbia County Transfer Stations.
